Jhumpa Lahiri will talk to John Mullan about her 2008 short story collection, Unaccustomed Earth.
An elderly widower visits his daughter and her son in Seattle after the sudden death of his wife. A married mother falls in love with a young student. A brother's alcoholism threatens the stability of his loving sister's family. Set in the middle class suburbs of America and in India, these eight stories of loss and dislocation examine the Bengali immigrant experience in the US and the fragile balance of family life.
Much praised by critics and writers, including Khaled Hosseini and Lorrie Moore, the collection was a number one New York Times bestseller and won the Frank O'Connor international short story award. Lahiri's new novel, The Lowland, has been longlisted for this year's Man Booker Award.
Early Birds! The first ten readers to book a ticket to the talk will receive a free copy of Unaccustomed Earth (winners will be notified by email).
